Year 2 Summer 2014 - 2

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome back and we hope you have all had a lovely break!

This half term our topic is ‘The World Cup’…. Here we go! Here we go! Here we go!

In Literacy we will be:

  • Reading books by the same Author
  • The Author we will be studying is Anthony Browne
  • Reading blurbs on the backs of different books.
  • Planning a story.
  • Writing an opening to their story.
  • Exploring character’s feelings through role play.
  • Reviewing magazines and newspapers and creating our own through undertaking different types of non-fiction such as - Letters / Reports / Instructions / Interviews etc

 

In Maths we will be learning about: 

  • Place value
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Money
  • Data & Time
  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions

In Geography, we will be:

  •  Using Maps to find Brazil
  •  Studying weather in Brazil
  •  Looking at homes and buildings in Brazil
  •  Finding out about the different purposes of buildings in Brazil
  •  Expressing opinions about the homes and buildings we have seen.

 

In ICT, we will:

  •  Collect data for ‘Which is our favourite flag? ‘
  •  Present data collected in a bar chart.

In Design & Technology, we will be:

  •  Naming different buildings
  •  Drawing simple shapes
  •  Designing & building our own football stadium.

In Science, we will be:

  •  Grouping objects that use electricity & electrical safety
  •  Exploring batteries and how they are used
  •  Constructing a circuit to power a bulb or buzzer.
  •  Finding out how switches break a circuit.
  •  Designing and making a device containing a circuit.
  •  Taking part in a workshop to light food lights for a football pitch

 

In RE, we will be undertaking work on the theme of The Birth of the Church:

  •  Knowing that when the Apostles received the Holy Spirit they spread the Good News
  •  Knowing that we can spread the Good News that Jesus is alive and wants us to love one another.
  •  Knowing about the early Christian Community and understanding that we are part of that community.
  •  Knowing that the Apostles realised that god could work through them.
  •  Knowing the story of Peter’s escape from prison and to reflect on its meaning.

We will also be exploring the Gospel Values through Sport, fair trade and find out about the work of organisations, such as CAFOD relating to our topic work.

Finally, the children will be making their own ‘fair trade coffee shop’ role play area this half term. We would welcome any donations of resources for this theme (fair trade packaging / plastic cups / paper plates etc / utensils etc).

To support the children’s work in Literacy we would also welcome any donations of old children’s magazines and quality local / national newspapers. You may like to share magazines and news reports at home to help support your child’s learning too!

We are also setting a summer reading challenge for the class. Our goal is to read and review 100 texts collectively during the World Cup. Please look out for any football shaped review sheets that your child may bring home and encourage them to participate in our challenge. With thanks!

Dear Parents / Carers,

In Literacy we will be learning about:

Information texts

  •  Exploring the features of information texts and writing a fact file about a dinosaur.
  •  Writing questions and using past and present verb tenses.

Quest and Adventure Stories

  •  Children will read a range of quest stories.
  •  They will explore 4 types of sentence and experiment with tense. 
  •  They will write their own extended stories.

In Maths we will be learning about:

Numbers and Fractions

  • Counting in Fractions.  
  • Finding ¼ ½ ¾ of amounts using sharing and number facts
  • Addition & Subtraction of 2-digit numbers

Shape and Measures

  • Identifying properties of 3d Shapes
  • Telling the time to the nearest quarter on an analogue clock.

Multiplication and Division

  • Working out multiplications and divisions
  • Understanding multiplication is the inverse of division.

Our Topic this half term is Saving Water

In Geography, we will be:

  •  Learning the Oceans of the world
  •  Understanding Water is precious
  •  Looking at countries around the world and how they use water
  •  Studying ocean life

    In Art, we will be:

  •  Studying Monet
  •  Discussing how Monet has painted water in his pictures
  •  Painting a picture of an ocean, river or lake 

In Science, we will be:

  •  Looking at different plants
  •  Understanding how plants grow and what they need to survive.

In ICT, we are designing a simulation

In Religion, this term is Eastertide

  •  We are looking at a time of new life.
  •  We will understand how Jesus lives on.
  •  We will reflect how the time of new life is reflected in our own lives.

In PE we will be practising:

  •  Multi skills
  •  Games
  •  Small ball skills

The children will also be taking their SATs during this half term and we wish them every success and know they will all do their very best.

Finally, would like to extend a huge thank you to the children and parents for their donations for our Lenten Tree appeal. We raised £20.00 and the children will choose the gift for a child in Africa this week.
