Class 3 Archive

On this page we save the the things we have done in previous terms and years....

Class 3 Spring 2014 - 2

Here's what we will be learning this half term.

In Literacy we will be covering traditional tales, information texts and poetry. All relating to our topic of the rainforest. The children will be reading lots of traditional tales set in the rainforest including The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry and The Turtle and The Island by Barbara Ker Wilson.

We will be continuing to learn to use powerful verbs and interesting adjectives to write excellent descriptions. Practice writing compound and complex sentences and writing our own versions of the stories we read. As well as learning how to write speech.

We will be learning how information texts are laid out and written, making notes and writing our own information texts about the layers of the rainforest.

In Numeracy the children will be learning to understand the fraction 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/3 and 1/6 and find these fractions of amounts. We will go on to learn to use addition and subtraction to solve word problems. We will also be time, position and direction. Throughout the half term we will be learning the 8 and 9 times tables. Again you can use doubling to learn 8 times table e.g. 5 x 4 = 20 therefore 5 x 8 = 40 (double 20)

Our topic is rainforests. We will be learning where rainforests are and researching the countries that have rainforests. Finding out about the amazing plants and animals that live in rainforests and creating some rainforest inspired art.

In Science the topic is Plants. We will be learning about the structure of plants and the functions of their different parts, photosynthesis, nutrients in soil, water transportation, a plant life cycle and seed dispersal.

The following websites can be used to support the children’s learning this half term.

Class 3 Spring 2014 - 1

Happy New Year, may it be a happy one. I hope you have had a lovely Chistmas break.

Here's what we will be learning this half term:

In Literacy we will be reading Myths and Legends from Ancient Greece. We will be finding out about how they are written and all the amazing characters, settings and plots they contain. We will be learning to use powerful verbs and interesting adjectives to write excellent descriptions. Practice writing compound and complex sentences and writing our own versions of the stories we read.

Towards the end of the half term we will be looking at humorous poetry.

This website is dedicated to the heroes, gods and monsters of Greek mythology:

http://mythweb.com/

In Numeracy the children will be consolidating their learning so far about Place Value and extending it for 3 and 4 digit numbers. We will go on to learn to use the most effective method for mental and written addition and subtraction. We will also be covering time, bar charts, pictograms, length, and weight.

The children worked really hard last term to learn their times tables and are making great progress. Children have individual times tables targets but as a class we have learnt 2, 3, 5, and 10s. This half term we will be focusing on 4s which children can learn by using their 2s and doubling. For example 2 x 2 = 4 therefore 2 x 4 = 8 (double 4). Learning times tables is of great importance and helps the children in many other areas.

This website has games for helping children practice their times tables:

Our topic is Ancient Greece and this week I am going to be asking the children what they would like to learn about so watch this space!

You can use this website to start finding out about Ancient Greece:

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ancientgreece/

In Science the topic is Rocks and Soils. We will be learning about different rocks and their uses and carrying out investigations. We will be finding out about what’s underneath our feet. Researching volcanoes and making our own!

Class 3 Autumn 2013 - 1

Now we have all settled in to the new school year I just wanted to give you some further details about the things we will be learning about this half term.

Our topic is Mighty Me, Mighty Mountains. During this topic we will be learning all about our bodies, the food that we need to eat to keep us healthy and our digestive and circulatory systems. We will go on to learn about the geography of mountain ranges and the lives of people who live in them.

In Literacy we have been reading the adventure stories of Traction Man and Thomas Tull. Next week the children will be writing their own adventure story. We will be going on to learn some poetry. Towards the end of the half term we will be learning how to write persuasively and the children will be writing adverts for climbing equipment.

In Numeracy the children have been learning about Place Value and will go on to learn addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, shape and money.

Homework will consist of:

  • Numeracy/Literacy

Given on a Friday to be handed in on a Monday and completed in big purple book.

  • Mental Maths.

A Numeracy target to work on from their Numeracy passport to be practiced in their small orange mental        maths book and tested weekly.

  • Spellings.

Practicing spellings in small beige coloured spelling book which will be given out on a Tuesday and tested the following Tuesday.

  • Times Tables.

Children will have times table test every week on a Wednesday. The new National Curriculum expects by the end of Year 4 children know all their tables up to 12x12. For Year 3 the expectation is that they know 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10s. Please ask your child which times table they are learning (it will be different for every child) and help them whenever possible to practice.

  • Daily reading.

Reading books will be changed on a weekly basis (the day will depend on which group they are in)

These websites are great for helping children practice their times tables and basic maths skills.

Once again please do not hesitate to contact me before or after school if you have any questions.

Class 3 - Summer 2013

I hope you all had a happy Easter and enjoyed the break.

Our topic for the first half term is the mysterious case of the multiplying magnets.

In Literacy we will be reading lots of adventure and mystery stories especially those written by Anthony Browne. We will then be writing our own. Towards the end of the half term we will be learning to write explanations.

In Numeracy we will be learning to add and subtract combinations of up to 3-digit numbers, solving word problems involving money and measures and multiplication and division.

Thank-you for your continued support in helping your child learn their times tables.

I will be having an extra push on this for the rest of the term and will be giving times tables test every Monday. Children in Year 4 should know multiplication and division facts up to 10x10 by the end of the Summer term. Children in year 3 should know multiplication and division fact for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times tables.

In Science we will be learning about Magnets and Springs.

During the last week of the half term we will be making moving monsters. I would be grateful if you could save and bring into school any cardboard boxes/tubes, bottle tops, egg cartons, plastic bottles or any other bits of junk that we could make our monsters out of.

Class 3 Spring Term (first half) 2013

Our topic this half term is habitats and we are all looking forward to our trip to Rocher Vale.

In Literacy the children have written some fantastic shape poems about animals and over the next few weeks will be working towards writing a non-chronological report about different habitats.

In Numeracy we have collected information about the pets children have at our school and presented what we found in bar charts. We are currently learning how to multiply numbers by doubling and we will be using this to help us multiply 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. Which we will then use to solve problems.

In Science we are learning about local habitats and understanding why animals live in their habitats.

In PE we are building on some of the skills we have already learnt in Gymnastics and using some apparatus to develop balancing, jumping and rolling skills.

Class 3 Spring 2012

Our topic for the first half term is The Romans.

Thank-you for all the information and resources you have let the children bring in so far, any more would be welcome. The children are really enjoying this topic and there is lots more to come.

In Literacy we have been learning about Roman myths and soon we will be writing our own. Then we will be learning about instructions and hosting a Roman banquet – more details to follow.

In History we have been learning about when the Romans invaded Britain. Coming up we will be discovering what happened when Boudicca lead a revolt against the Romans, understanding what life was like at this time and understanding the impact the Romans had on Britain.

We are even linking our PE to Romans and Roman myths by practicing Roman army drills with the shields we have made. We are currently working on putting together a dance using some of the characters we have met in the myth stories.

We have been using ICT to find out even more about the Romans and we will be using Microsoft Word for typing.

In Numeracy we have been adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers, partitioning and problem solving. We are currently learning to understand fractions. Over the next few weeks we will be learning more about 2D and 3D shapes, conducting an investigation and learning how to show what we have found.

In Science we are learning about Rocks and Soils.

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you have had a lovely summer and are settling in to the new school year.  I am looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and productive year.

In Class 3 we will be covering some very interesting topics such as Healthy Eating, The Romans, Plants and Habitats, making moving monsters and studying our local area in more depth. If you have anything at home or any specialist knowledge in these areas especially with regards to the local area and its history it would be very gratefully received.

Children will need their full PE kits on Mondays and Thursdays but PE kits should be kept in school all week as extra opportunities to do PE may occur and some after school clubs require a PE kit to be worn.  Also during inclement weather children might need to change into pumps in school.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and tested the following Friday, the children will also be given opportunities to practice these in school.  Reading books will be given out and changed regularly.  Reading books and diaries must be brought into school daily to maximize extra opportunities to read.

Please don’t hesitate to come and see me after school if you have any questions or queries.

Best wishes

Miss Mulligan
