Year 1 Archive

Year 1 Spring 2014 - 2

In Year 1 throughout Spring 2 our areas and topics of learning this term are:

Science:    Living/non living... plants, animals, humans.

As part of the topic we will look at and sort things into living and not living. We will investigate what all living things need to survive and thrive. We will especially concentrate on plants by planting and investigating seeds.

Role play area:

Our role play area is starting off as a Garden Centre but this area may change as the term progresses.

Art:

We will be looking at some of the work of Vincent Van Gough and Georgia O’Keefe, especially their flower art, so that we can produce our own work inspired by what we see. We will be working in paper, oil pastels and water colour and using some tone in our creative work. We will be looking at real flowers to inspire our own work too.

We may also use seeds to create a piece of art and use IT to design a picture.

Literacy:

Stories with repeating patterns (Fiction)

We will use ‘Bring the Rain to Kapati’ and ‘Handa’s Hen’ as two of our main texts. We will be using description in our work.

Traditional Tales (Fiction)

We will be listening to an oral story, and reading two main texts: ‘The House that Jack Built’ and ‘Anancy and Mr Dry Bone’ to discuss settings, plots and characters. We will be writing our own versions of the stories.

Humorous Poems (Poetry)

Humerous poetry will give the children the opportunity to explore capital letters. The children will consider ways to join sentences together and how to write creatively.

We will consider how Jesus chose 12 special friends but that he also chooses us.

We will hear and respond to the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’.

We will think about how we can welcome Jesus into our homes, lives and families this Lent.

We will reflect on ‘Good Friday’.

Welcome back after the half term and we hope you all had a lovely break.

May you and your child enjoy this half term.

Mrs Farmer.
