Year 1

Year 1 Summer 2014 - 1

Welcome back to you all. We hope you all had a restful, holy Easter break and that you have a happy and interesting half term.

As you know already, Miss Williams will be joining us as a final year student and the children have already made her very welcome.

English…. Traditional Tales

The children have already made a fantastic start on their traditional tales topic. We have been focusing on the story of Rapunzel, looking at the structure of the story and the characters. We will be writing our own versions of Rapunzel so the children can concentrate on writing proper sentences.

We will also be looking at writing a letter focusing on composition and extending sentences.

Children will get a chance to have a look at some poetry looking at syllables and will write their own haiku.

One day a week we have also started practicing our handwriting and grammar. The children will look at letter formation and punctuation.

Mathematics

The children have started this term looking at numbers; we have been focusing on partitioning and adding two digit numbers. Our next challenge will be subtraction.

We will then move on to looking at shape and measurement. Children will identify 3D shapes and describe them.

Children will also be looking at time, understanding how to read an analogue clock and will take part in practical activities recording times.

Science/Topic... Sound and hearing.

In our topic this half term we will be thinking about sound. We will be going on a listening walk and thinking about how we can listen carefully.

We will explore loud and quiet sounds and will describe different sounds. We will explore how different objects make different sounds and think about how sounds get fainter as they travel away.

We will create sounds using different materials and in D/T we will be investigating, designing and making a musical instrument.

We will sort instruments according to the sound they make and will be creating a short piece of music using our instruments.

PLEASE SEND IN ANY THINGS YOU THINK MAY HELP YOUR CHILD TO MAKE THEIR INSTRUMENT AND TALK ABOUT THIS WITH YOUR CHILD

R/E... The Resurrection of Jesus.

Knowing about the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter

Knowing that Jesus rose from the dead on the first Easter Sunday

Following the events after Jesus rose and knowing that Jesus appeared to the disciples and even ate with them.

Reflecting on Thomas and how he did not believe that Jesus was alive at first.

We will be listening to stories, role playing the events and reflecting on how these events affect us.
